SafeNav Project Progress – April 2024

In April, the SafeNav Project, represented by Capt. Jorgen Grindevoll and Jena Dover, participated in the Transport Research Arena Conference 2024 in Dublin, gaining valuable insights and engaging in productive discussions. Key meetings included dignitaries like Magda Kopczyńska, DG for Mobility and Transport at the EC, and Jaap Gebraad, Secretary-General at Waterborne TP, where the team shared developments on the SafeNav System, an AI-driven decision support system for ship operators. The system aims to enhance maritime navigation safety and efficiency, particularly for autonomous and remote operations. Grindevoll also discussed SafeNav's impact on maritime technology in an interview. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between regulatory authorities, industry leaders, and tech pioneers in promoting maritime safety innovation.

The Faculty of Maritime Studies at the University of Rijeka, a project partner, also hosted its annual Career Day, offering students the chance to engage with more than 50 companies and institutions in the maritime industry. The event featured interactive programs, presentations on the SafeNav project, and participation from prominent shipowners, highlighting its role in preparing students for modern labor market challenges.

The ambition of the three-year maritime project is to develop and test a highly innovative Collision Prevention Solution that will significantly reduce the probability of collisions and groundings, thereby enhancing safer navigation at sea for an existing and new generation of vessels that aim for remote operation or autonomously in the future.
